Preparedness advice, written for the way most people actually live

Most emergency-preparedness content assumes a house, a garage, and storage to spare. Most people — renters, apartment residents, students, young families in small homes — have none of those. Small Space Emergency exists to close that gap.

What we believe

Emergency preparation should feel achievable, not alarming. A renter with one closet, a power bank, and a written plan is meaningfully safer than a homeowner with a garage full of gear they have never opened.

Every guide on this site is built around constraints our readers actually have: limited square footage, leases that prohibit modifications, normal budgets, and households that include kids, roommates, and pets. If a recommendation does not work in a 600-square-foot apartment, it does not go in.

Editorial standards

Practical over fearful

We write for Tuesday-night reality, not worst-case fantasy. Every recommendation has to be doable in a rental, on a normal budget, without specialized skills.

Evidence-informed

Guidance is cross-checked against public emergency-management recommendations (such as ready.gov and the Red Cross) and adapted for small-space constraints. Where official guidance and apartment reality conflict, we say so.

Honest about products

Product guides use published comparison criteria, not invented test results. Placeholders are clearly marked until real, verified product data is added. Affiliate links never change our criteria.

General information, not professional advice

This site provides general preparedness information. It is not emergency, medical, legal, or engineering advice. During an active emergency, always follow your local authorities and emergency services first.

How we handle products

Our product guides lead with comparison criteria — footprint, capacity, power source, portability, shelf life, and renter suitability — so you can evaluate any product, not just the ones we list. Where specific product data has not yet been verified, we show a clearly marked placeholder rather than inventing prices, specifications, or test results.

Some links may be affiliate links that earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never influence our criteria. Details are in the affiliate disclosure.

What this site is — and is not

Small Space Emergency provides general preparedness information for educational purposes. It is not emergency, medical, legal, engineering, or public-safety advice, and it is not a substitute for instructions from your local authorities. During an active emergency, always follow official guidance first.
